We are currently in quarantine, staying at home since 8th March because of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Italian Government took the decision to lock-down the country in order to contain the infection.
Some people agree with the decision, some others don’t. We are among those who agree and comply with it. It is easy to comment about these decisions and is very easy to criticize them but what if we were the decision makers, what would we have done? The important thing is that as many lives as possible are saved. But this post is not meant to discuss about good or bad decisions but about what to do during this period with our little ones.
During several weeks of quarantine, we have to make sure that we have enough ideas to entertain our toddlers.
I must say that we are lucky as we live in a house with a small garden and this allows us to enjoy some fresh air during the sunny days. But as there are also grey days out there, I decided to make a list of activities I do with my toddler. So, here we are:
1. HEADU Games http://bit.ly/2IKztDw
Headu is an innovative project that aims to develop a child's multiple intelligences. During the learning process and while building skills, children use their brain in different ways, as if drawing on different sets of "intellectual resources”.
We have the following games that we play in rotation every day so that there is always the sense of something new, and our son is enthusiastic and enjoys playing with them:
Similar!, a game of association of cards according to categories of belonging http://bit.ly/38Md1op
Emotions and Actions, multiple games with flashcards that teach how to familiarize with emotions, facial expressions and everyday actions http://bit.ly/2wXyux8
Shorter and Longer!, with the help of which 6 figures are obtained, in two versions: one shorter and one longer https://amzn.to/2TPBlkT
2. Lisciani games
We have the Baby Memory cards with animals by Lisciani https://amzn.to/39Rxqd0 which we enjoy playing. The child has to recognize the pairs of animals, thus stimulating his memory and attention. As for Headu games, there are many other games available, check their website!
3. Free drawing
My sons loves drawing. I leave him free to draw however he feels like (at the table, on the floor, standing or while seated), the only rule is to draw on paper. Of course, there were some moments in which I found some “original” drawings on the walls or on the floor, but he usually tends to respect my request to draw only on paper. In case of drawings in less desirable places I use a magic spoon, which works almost always!
4. Colouring with chalks
He usually colours with chalks outside, in the garden. But in case of emergency I purchased an adhesive blackboard. The chalks that we own are by Crayola https://amzn.to/33kR8Lv. These chalks, though a bit dusty, are very nice and washable!
5. Finger painting
I purchased the Papier Multi-Technique by Canson https://amzn.to/2IJFz79 in order to allow my son to paint with washable tempera by Arteza and create masterpieces🥰.
My son enjoys mixing the flour with other ingredients, with the help of our Kenwood standing mixer, and making biscuits. He loves also tasting the sweet raw dough.😋
We read different kind of books whenever he wants and feels like. There is one book in particular that he currently loves: “Surprise! Bing”. https://amzn.to/2vXYatL. We read it all over again!
8. Jump on the pillows in the bed
This is an amazing activity which allows parents and toddlers to connect and have fun!
9. Hide and seek
My son is 18 months and he loves this game. He doesn’t know yet how to really hide but he imitates us and has a lot of fun! Also, another way around is to hide objects and ask him to find them.
These are just some activities we do, of course not all in one day 😊. Enjoy your free time with your kids and toddlers as much as you can: from a certain point of view, this quarantine is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
I always say: happy babies now, accomplished adults later!
